Green Practices

Coriander Designs acknowledges our obligation to maintain and nurture the ecology of our planet. We are fully aware that humankind has a responsibility to respect and preserve the delicate balance of nature. Accordingly, we pledge ourselves to the planet, sustainable use of the earth’s resources and the protection of the natural environment. Coriander Designs practices environmentally friendly preferable product manufacturing, i.e. we use products or services that have a reduced effect on human health and the environment when compared with competing products or services that serve the same purpose. Here are some ways in which Coriander Designs strives to lighten our footprint:

Beech:

Beech is a premium hardwood, with strength, density, and technical properties comparable to Cherry. Beech is grown in Europe on highly productive plantations, interspersed with reintroduced indigenous trees to preserve native ecosystems. Certified Beech is produced using proprietary technology in a sustainable and environmentally responsible manner. Coriander prides itself by using sustainably-grown and harvested premium hardwood.

FAS Select Grade Lumber, Environmentally safe harvesting:

Coriander standards for solid stock call for FAS Select grade lumber. Firsts and Seconds are selected for grain quality and uniformity, whereas lesser grades of lumber allow for knots and wild graining. Each board and veneer flitch Coriander uses is harvested in accordance with the woodworking industry standards in regards to minimal environmental impact. Each tree is selected individually, cut and pulled from the forest, without clear-cutting or mass harvesting.

Book-Matched, Narrow Heart Veneer, and 45# PBC:

Coriander has the strictest criteria for veneer flitch matching. Only the thickest veneers carefully book-matched, and critically selected for narrow-heart graining pass the inspection and become Coriander Casegoods. Close cooperation with suppliers ensures that only the highest quality veneer panels arrive at Coriander. Select veneer panels used in Coriander’s manufacturing process pass all UL and ANSI tests for flame spread, and formaldehyde emissions, while remaining easy to machine.

Foam used is CFC Free and Recyclable:

CFC is a chemical combination that is detrimental to living organisms. Unfortunately it is also emitted during the manufacture of common foam. Coriander has made it policy to only use foam without CFC, but mandates that it still accommodate 2.7 pound 45 ILD requirements. All the foam that is used in products manufactured by Coriander is recyclable.

“Green” Fabrics:

All the major fabric mills have come out with very durable and attractive fabrics that are of 100% reconstituted materials. When combined with a backing, these fabrics are easily tailored for Coriander products and can be utilized like any other fabric.

Varnish:

Coriander uses a self sealing, water-white, catalyzed conversion varnish. This allows for the strongest finish available on the market, without sacrificing the appearance of the wood. Conversion Varnishes have come a long way in regards to environmental concerns without losing the durability or appearance. The varnish used by Coriander has no formaldehyde. Formaldehyde has been a staple ingredient in conversion varnishes in the past, but is also very dangerous to a large segment of the population.

There are no HAPs associated with Coriander’s varnish. Hazardous Air Pollutants are typical when the product off-gasses. The combination of catalysts and chemical make-up of the varnish used by Coriander, allows for a HAPs free product. As the item is not completely cured for about a month after production, the HAPs free aspect is important because the majority of the cure time will occur at the installation site.

Aside from HAPs, Coriander’s varnish is VOC compliant and free of Lead and Chromate.

Factory:

Coriander donated large portions of land next to the current factory location for water retention and purification pools. The pools will purify any run-off water from the surrounding area before allowing it to continue into streams and lakes. Along with cleaning the run-off water, the retention pools limit flooding and subsequent damage.

Coriander recycling practices return over 100 tons of separated wood debris and other recyclable products to use. Our state of the art air filtration system not only protects our employees but also ensures the factory is clean for finishing. Excess fabric is donated to local schools and charities.

LEED, and Specific Project Accommodations:

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design is a national program developed to form an index for sustainable design. LEED measurements apply to all aspects of a project’s interior and exterior. As a part of the LEED-CI, furniture is able to earn several points in regards to Low-Emitting Materials, Indoor Chemical and Pollutant Source Control, and CFC Reduction, and regional supplies.

Coriander is able to follow through on the LEED’s requirements due to various materials used in the construction.  Coriander can acquire and incorporate the use of low formaldehyde composite panel products, as well as agrifiber panels.

If there are special requirements that a project needs to accommodate, Coriander is your source. With the JIT manufacturing technique Coriander can alter most any aspect of our products to fit your needs. Be it non-ferrous metal screws for X-ray rooms, or formaldehyde free products for a LEED project, Coriander can satisfy the requirements.
